How to Sing When You’re Sad

The Power of Praising God, Even When You’re Not Feeling It

Have you ever been in a worship service surrounded by people who are singing passionately and it seems like everyone in the room is into it except for you?  You’re conflicted internally because you know you should be praising God and you wish you could join in, but you just can’t seem to get there in your heart? If so, you’re not alone.

It’s hard to sing when you’re not feeling it.

This is exactly the experience that the psalmist writes about in Psalm 137. Due to some crummy circumstances (exile in Babylon), the worshiper decided to hang up his harp and quit singing. When asked to make some music, he responds,

“How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?” Psalm 137:4

It’s a fair question. How in the world are we supposed to sing praises to the LORD when our world has turned upside down on us? When we are dealing with a hard situation like cancer, depression, or estrangement from someone we love, how can we still manage to sing a song?

Cliche alert, but at least part of the answer to this question must be found in the surpassing character of God.  The only way to keep singing when life stinks is to remember that He is still the I AM – not the I USED TO BE.

His loyal love is strong as ever when you’re frantic and out of control (Hebrews 13:5). If you are “all over the map,” He’s all over the map with you. He is still holy, sovereign, and faithful – even on those days when you feel like you’re done.

If you are experiencing sadness today, know that there is no shame in it, especially when that sadness draws you nearer to God. And remember, even if you are sad, you can still sing.

Because “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8

It’s a new day with God. Run with it.

  1. I really needed to hear that Pastor Dave !!! I think for at least 10years I’ve only sang maybe 8 times maybe less ! HWhen at Walbash I would try to sing once a month I always sang because I wanted others to hear how God could loves them, I don’t want to go into the whys on hear but it’s been something that I loved to do and how I worshiped the lord there are times where a song will come from my mouth but onestly I’ve not used song to be a testimony in a long time. Not sure on how to pray about this . I want to sing in the rain again like we use to remember with our thumbs up, elbows back, knees together …. not caring what it sounds like just sing because God called but I think I wonder if he would call me ever again to do this. Do it with a passion like it once was. Teresa
