We Made it Through the Maze – Here’s How

It’s easy to get lost when you’re looking down. The key is to stay calm, stick together, and follow the Leader.

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

-Jesus, Matthew 7:13-14

I recently enjoyed (sort of) a seasonal activity with my family. It’s called a corn maze. In the midwestern United States, where there is an abundance of corn fields, it’s one of the strange things we do for fun in the fall.

It goes like this. A farmer will cut out pathways through a field of corn to form a gigantic navigation puzzle. By design, there are lots of twists, turns, and dead ends, making it very easy to get lost.

The corn is tall and once you go in, you’re committed.

What’s the objective? To get out of the maze before it gets dark!

On our recent adventure, I chose to be a follower – not the leader. My brave daughter, Abigail, accepted the role of navigator for us.

But as we made our way, I did offer a little tip. It was late in the afternoon, and I told my group to notice the direction of the sun and that it would be setting in the west. In a worst case scenario, they could raise their heads and take note of the position of the sun to get their bearings and get unlost.

Feeling turned around

Since the sun is a fixed point of reference, it is a reliable navigational tool. It comes up in the east and goes down in the west – every single day. Notice the sun and you will know which way to go.

The same can be said of Jesus and his Word. Notice the Son and you will know which way to go. When life feels like a confusing maze, the Lord is our fixed point of reference. He re-orients us.

As we’re dealing with relationship issues, processing traumatic events, and wondering what’s coming next, we all need help navigating. In a world screaming different directions at us…”This way!” or “That way!”, it is easy to feel lost.

Anyone up for going God’s way? Anyone care to follow His lead? As the psalmist said,

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”

-Psalm 119:105

Thanks to Abbi’s guidance, we made our way through the maze just fine. There were some nervous moments, but we made it.

And you’re going to make it through your maze, too. Just stay calm, stick together, and keep following your Leader.

It’s a new day with God. Run with it.
