Finding Strength in this Attribute of God

Everything about life is subject to change, except one thing

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Hebrews 13:8

Sam couldn’t believe how quickly things had changed. Or, at least his perception of things had changed.

One moment it seemed like all was well and his heart was full of joy and contentment. The sky was blue, the birds were singing, and Sam was in a good place.

But Sam blinked and it was over. The outlook changed. Something happened.

Something always happens.

The text he received left him feeling alone and anxious. Suddenly his sense of wellbeing was replaced with a sense of doubt and dread.

A Helpful Reminder

But in that moment, God reminded Sam of something that he had forgotten. God reminded Sam that he doesn’t change. Ever.

This helped. It reassured Sam that even though the circumstances of his life had quickly changed, he was tethered to the One who does not change. Therefore, he could still be joyful and content.

Sam was strengthened in realizing that God was the same after the text as he was before the text. He hadn’t changed a bit.

Moods change, but God doesn’t.

Circumstances change, but God doesn’t.

The weather changes, but God doesn’t.

People’s view of us changes, but God doesn’t.

Our health and our bodies may change, but God doesn’t.

"Even though the circumstances of his life had quickly changed, he was tethered to the One who does not change."

The basis of our joy and hope – Jesus – is unchanging. He is, as David put it, the Rock of our salvation. Our strength and security are anchored not in the fleeting circumstances of life but in the character of God, who is “the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

If it feels like everything around you is changing, and not for the better, take heart in knowing that Jesus remains the same. He is as good, as powerful, and as present now as he ever was. In that sense, nothing’s changed.

It’s a new day with God. Run with it.
