3 Keys to Taking the Grind out of Work

If you ever feel like your job lacks purpose and meaning, you are not alone. Gallup surveys on employee engagement have consistently found that around 70% of folks are not into their jobs. This means that for 7 out of 10 people, their bodies are showing up for work every day, but their hearts are not.

Even the most glamorous of gigs can lose its luster after a while. Actors, athletes, and professionals of all kinds deal with occupational dissatisfaction at one time or another, making them feel more like cogs in a machine than fulfilled contributors to the good of society.

I used to walk into Starbucks and think being a barista would be such a great job…cool environment, constant aroma of coffee, the employee discount. I have since learned that even a job like that can become a grind after a while (pun intended😁).

Is there hope? Absolutely, yes. Believe it or not, God has something to say about your job and your workplace. To help take the grind out of work, here are a few mobile insights from Scripture that you can take along as you show up to do your thing every day:

  1. Your work matters to God. Whether you are in a factory, a field, an office, or on 5th Avenue, God cares about what you do for a living. Truth is, your job can be a platform to honor Him. You don’t have to be a preacher to have a message. Here’s how Paul the apostle (and tent-maker) put it:

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Colossians 3:17

2. You don’t work alone. Jesus (who was a carpenter by the way, Mark 6:1-3) promised to be with us always. This means that He even goes to work with us. So, no matter how rough your work  environment, or how weird your hours, the Lord’s empowering presence goes with you.

3. You are significant because of who you are in Christ – not because of what you do for a living. God never intended for you to have to validate yourself by your performance or title. Your existence was already validated, two thousand years ago on the Cross. Your job will never add to or take away from your true worth, because that is forever settled in Christ.

Who knew? By integrating our faith and our work, something amazing can happen to our jobs. What used to be just work now has the potential to be so much more.

So, goodbye daily grind and hello worship!

It’s a new day with God. Run with it.

  1. As an accountant during tax season, I am fortunate that I love what I do, helping folks traverse the U.S. Tax code! I also use my business as a avenue to share the love of Jesus with others, by looking for those opportunities where I see or feel a need that needs to be met. This post is a great reminder for all of us!
